Take a few young entrepreneurs from Bloemfontein (E2Bale2) and their supporting fund (National Youth Development Agency - NYDA), match them up with the top global companies in their respective niches and there you have SMSElectricity – the first of many MobileHub projects that will change the way South Africans, those with bank accounts as well as those whom do not currently have access to banking services, access payment technologies.
The SMSElectricity project enables consumers to easily register for and immediately transact with mobile banking and commerce services. So, prepaid electricity at your fingertips and wherever you go, as a first offering from the E2Bale2 and MoPay team, with many more offerings to be added over the next weeks and months.
The electronic purchase system includes E2BA-LE2, MoPay International, Paybox, Sybase 365 and Actaris Metering systems. The five institutions form a systematic link that facilitates the connections between the purchaser, the cell phone networks, banks and electricity service providers.
The public will access these services through a number of agents and places of presence, all over the country and even from across international borders. The SMSElectricity project stands to deliver a number of social benefits, over and above the main objectives, pertaining to entrepreneurial development, job creation and general socio-economic stimulation
The agents or access community will offer job and entrepreneurial opportunities to thousands of South Africans over time, and will also act as facilitator for access to Telehealth-, E-Learning- and general technology services. These access points or places of presence will be presented predominantly under the MobileHub umbrella, about which more information will be published over the next weeks, as the roll-out of the current focus project – SMSElectricity – proceeds.
